Dubai is all set to launch flying cars in July 2017

Dubai is on another level, don’t believe me? Read it for yourself.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced its plans to introduce flying cars in Dubai at the World Government Summit, on Monday.

Yes, you read it right!

Dubai has been leaving all the tech savvy countries behind in the technology industry and this time they surprised the whole world by showcasing its Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (or you can also call it a flying car) at the World Government Summit, on Monday.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has collaborated with the Chinese firm Ehang to make this happen and has already carried out first test run of the Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV), named Ehang 184.

Ehang 184. is a one person drone which will ferry commuters between predetermined checkpoints by July.

The AAV exhibited at the summit is not just a model; it is a real version that we have already experimented the vehicle in a flight in Dubai sky. The RTA is making every effort to start the operation of the AAV in July 2017,” said Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

This exciting flying car comes with a touchscreen displaying a map of all the destinations and has preset routes. Once the passenger selects the intended destination, the flying car will automatically take off and safely land itself and the passenger to the predetermined checkpoint.

The entire operation will be monitored and controlled by a ground-based centre.

The trial run of the first AAV is in implementation of the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world,” said Mr Al Tayer.

It replicates Dubai Self-driving Transport Strategy aimed at transforming 25 per cent of total individual trips in Dubai into self-driving trips using various modes of transport by 2030. The step would also enhance the integration between public transport modes and people happiness through the provision of smooth, quick and innovative mobility,” he further added.

According to a statement made by Mr Al Tayyer, the Ehang 184 is fitted with eight main propellers and they have addressed the highest levels of security in its designing and manufacturing.

“In case of any failure in the first propeller, there would be seven other propellers ready to complete the flight and a smooth landing, while mitigating the impact of the fault sustained by the first propeller.”

“In case of any malfunctioning in one of these systems, the standby system would be capable of controlling and safely steering the AAV to the programmed landing point. The AAV is designed to operate under all climatic conditions unless there is a thunderstorm. The vehicle is fitted with highly accurate sensors with a very low-error threshold and can resist vibrations and extreme temperatures” as stated by Mr Al Tayer.

This flying car has a maximum cruising speed of 160kph and is able to fly for a maximum of 30 minutes.

“The 4G data network is used in communication between the AAV and the ground control center. The company had also provided the support needed to ensure the continued communication between the AAV and the control centre through M2M and LTE technologies,” said Mattar Al Tayer, the director general and chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

This is definitely a new feather in Dubai’s cap. Where people were still fascinated by driver-less cars, flying car was a dream for many and we must give credit to Dubai for turning this dream into a reality.
